Vertical to Horizontal

Vertical and Horizontal Systems Designs are widely used by many fields, industries, and even social systems. How humans act within each layer in my Dimensions of Power illustration can be on their spectrum.

In the United States, the factions that control the politics and social systems are striving to input these mechanism’s. Republican’s lean more toward top-down systems and Democrats lean more toward bottom-up systems. To be a centrist implies you believe that both methods are needed, depending on the situation and reflecting the needs of the people involved.

The Vertical Framework is built around those relationships consisting of unequal power. The rules of interpersonal relationships will vary and we default to supremacy based models when rights and procedures are not detailed and accessible.

This work sheet is an intense review of these social dynamics with the goal of inspiring more intentional manifestations for future leadership and mentorship.

The Horizontal Framework of behaviors is built around the 2010 research of Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett and incorporates the 1999 work of Tema Okun’s White Supremacy Culture as the basis for Self-Preserving Behaviors. The other behaviors were chosen to balance Okun’s original labels during two informal study group sessions with peers. All of these descriptive words may be modified; some are minor variations on the same theme.
